SYNOPSIS

The controversial story of this emotionally and cinematically gripping film is the 24-hour journey of two women as they negotiate for an illegal abortion in Romania during the final days of the communist Ceausescu regime.

Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) and Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) are polytechnic students at the local university. As in most sectors of Romanian life, the dorms are rife with a flourishing black market economy, where everything from hot showers to Kent cigarettes and Tic-Tac breath mints are sold on the sly.

While other students busy themselves with exams, Gabita nervously prepares for an unspecified trip. Aided by her roommate and best friend Otilia - the practical one in the equation - it becomes clear that Gabita is readying herself for a black market abortion.

Mishaps, miscommunication and heartwrenching turns prevail as the young women descend into a nightmare of suspense as they put Gabita's life in the hands of the quietly monstrous Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), the methodical underground abortionist who emerges as one of the more potent screen villains in years.

Featuring powerful performances by Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu in the lead roles and impeccably shot by Oleg Mutu (THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU), the film is directed by Cristian Mungiu.
