Starting TUE, July 1 in New York City, at JAZZ STANDARD, 7:30 & 9:30 PM
RCINY and Jazzaway Records are proud to announce the American tour of Sam Newsome & Lucian Ban Ensemble promoting the release of their most recent album, The Romanian-American Jazz Suite. The collaboration fruit of two very different cultures, it is a multi-movement work composed by saxophonist Sam Newsome and pianist Lucian Ban, combining Romanian folk music and American jazz. It represents the perspective of both an American jazz musician exploring Romanian folk music, and a Romanian jazzman reinvestigating the music of his country after having lived in America for several years. Get a taste of it!
The group features an international cast of world class American and Romanian jazz musicians: Sam Newsome (soprano sax), Lucian Ban (piano), Alex Harding (bariton sax & bass clarinet, July 1), Abraham Burton (tenor sax, July 2, 3 & 8), Sorin Romanescu (guitar), Arthur Balogh (double bass, July 1-3), John Hebert (double bass, July 8), Willard Dyson (drums, July 1-3), Nasheet Waits (drums, July 8). The CD has been released by Jazzaway Records and is distributed in the US by North Country Distributors.
"The Romanian influence is apparent after understanding the intent of Ban and
Newsome. What is more at the forefront is some beautiful jazz playing by a very
capable ensemble - whether from America, Romania or anywhere in between." -
Skip Spratt, The Sax Shed
"This very surprising disc shows cultures can mix, and in the case of these
two, especially well" - Thomas R. Erdmann, jazzreview.com
